Hand Therapy

We use our hands everyday to perform simple and complex movements... from picking up a coffee cup to french braiding a child's hair. If you are a musician, your hands play the keys that create melodies. If you are an athlete, your hands allow you to grasp the ball to make the final score. If you are a carpenter, your hands grip the tools that build countertops and cabinets.

But what happens when a traumatic injury suddenly amputates your finger or your hand? Life is temporarily altered and, without surgical and therapeutic intervention, perhaps permenantly altered. At Helping Hands Work & Wellness, our certified hand therapists not only get you back to full function, but also support you through the emotional aspect of your injury.

HHW Hand Therapists provide evaluation and treatment and custom orthoses for the following injuries/problems:

Hand Therapy is an advanced specialty and provides rehabilitation for traumatic injuries, overuse conditions, arthritis or chronic conditions of the hand and upper body (elbow, shoulder, neck). A hand therapist is an occupational therapist or physical therapist with minimum 5 years experience, who has successfully completed the "Hand Therapy Certification Exam".

Certified Hand Therapists provide reliable and valid objective assessments for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions effecting the upper extremity. These findings are used to establish a plan of care that will lead to a shorter duration of treatment with less cost to all involved.

Pregnancy Program

Our holistic approach and blend of therapy and wellness services can address many prenatal and postpartum needs. Our wellness services can ease the challenges of swollen ankles, sciatic nerve pain, carpal tunnel syndrome and low back pain.

Physical Therapy

Pregnancy is fertile ground for back pain due to center of gravity "shifts" as the uterus expands. Up to 50% of women experience back pain which typically starts during the 3rd trimester and can last up to 6 months after delivery. Postural changes, overburdened spinal muscles and loose joints and ligaments are all associated with back pain.

HHW's Pregnancy Exercise Program includes:

  • Guidelines for safe aerobic exercise

  • Pelvic tilts

  • Breathing techniques

  • Proper body mechanics

  • Trunk & leg strengthening

  • Kegels

Occupational Therapy

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) effects as many as 1 in 3 pregnant women, and is caused by increased fluid in the "tunnel" of the wrist, which in turn compresses the median nerve. Signs and symptoms include tingling or numbness in the hand, pain or burning in the fingers and frequently dropping objects.

HHW's CTS program includes:

  • Night splints for symptom relief

  • Stretching and nerve gliding exercises

  • Hand/forearm massage

  • Work station/activity modification

  • Cryotherapy

Massage Therapy

The benefits of pregnancy massage include increased cellular repair, reduced edema, increased circulation and sedation of the sympathetic nervous system. Massage also alleviates stress on weight-bearing joints, reduces neck / back pain and provides emotional support.
